Referral practice experience for student vet nurses

A referral centre in Essex is working with Nottingham Trent University to support the training of vet nurses (VNs).

Southfields Veterinary Specialists, in Laindon, has offered a group of trainee VNs full-time placements for the final year of their three-year undergraduate course.

The practice, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, will allow the students to have access to all areas as well as giving them the chance to work alongside specialists.

Operations manager Daniel Hogan says the students will also spend part of their time at a first-opinion veterinary practice to give them additional experience.

‘It’s a terrific opportunity and we believe our students will benefit enormously from their year working with us.’

‘They will be provided with accommodation and looked after as if they were employees.’

Initially, Southfields will host four students on a full-time placement, but hopes to increase numbers.

‘The first year will help our staff understand just what this university link-up will entail for them and how we can make it work best to ensure the most rewarding experience and outcome for all of us’, he said.
