[Video] What advice would you give to new vets starting out?

We recently asked a number of vets to give us their best advice for new vets starting out.

Kendal Shepherd, a vet and animal behaviourist, believes it’s important to concentrate on your surgical and consultant expertise when you’re starting out in practice.

Simon Bewsey-Dyke said that his first couple of years were daunting, but being surrounded by people that wanted him to succeed made it easier.

Louise Corah, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, said that new vets shouldn’t be afraid to seek advice from other vets. She also said that it’s important to keep an eye out for opportunities and stay openminded to these – she herself never envisioned doing a PhD. This was echoed by Karen Reed, executive director at Dogs Trust, whose best advice was to not be too wedded to any particular plans, as opportunities may arise that you weren't expecting.
