Oxford University are seeking for a veterinary surgeon/NVS to join our team of vets at the Department of Biomedical Services. We will consider candidates who wish to work part-time as well as full time. There is also potential for some flexible working, this is a permanent contract.

The core purpose of the University of Oxford’s Biomedical Services (BMS) is to provide for the care and welfare of animals in experimental research and in doing so we support the scientific community across the University. We are in effect an internal business with researchers as our customers.

At BMS we have a team of in-house veterinary team, with a clear remit that supports our researchers by providing the clinical expertise they need and advising them on animal welfare and how to work within the legal compliance framework of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA).

We are looking for people who appreciate the need to provide animal services for the advancement of medical and life sciences research. Our vets therefore have a core role to play in providing expert support and clinical procedural expertise not only to the University’s Principal Investigators and their research groups but also to our animal technicians at BMS.

As well as an excellent remuneration and benefits package, we will train our new vets who are not already Named Veterinary Surgeons to achieve NVS status, thereby enhancing not just your expertise but also your career opportunities. Once a NVS with experience, the salary band will be increased to grade 9. It is expected that this transition from grade 8 to grade 9 will take place 12 months from commencement. We are just as interested in existing Named Veterinary Surgeons who would join us at a grade 9.

If you are committed to supporting animal welfare and the advancement of medical and life sciences research and want to use your expertise within a world leading University, you can find out more by speaking to our Director, James Bussell, who can tell you more about the work we do and the role you could play in delivering that work. James can be reached on james.bussell@bms.ox.ac.uk
