Job Summary
Veterinary Research Officers report to a Senior Veterinary Research Officer and are primarily involved in scientific work within one of the 5 Branches of VSD. These are: Bacteriology, Disease Surveillance and Investigation, Chemical Surveillance, Immunodiagnostics and Virology.
There are currently two 1-Yr fixed term posts currently available in Disease Surveillance and Investigation Branch, one in post mortem/histopathology and the other in disease diagnosis and surveillance.
The successful applicant’s duties will include the following: -
- Animal Disease Diagnosis and Surveillance
- Post Mortem / Histopathology / Disease Surveillance
- Management
- Technology/knowledge Transfer
- Veterinary and Scientific Advice
- Research and Development
Veterinary Research Officers may be required to carry out duties other than those listed above, according to AFBI’s business need including as part of the Institute’s response to a major epizootic disease, food-chain or other emergency. They may also be required to teach university or other students, and to carry out duties under the Animal Scientific Procedures Act.
The successful applicants may be required to travel locally, nationally or internationally in order to perform the duties of the posts. They will also be required to occasionally work outside normal office hours, particularly in relation to animal disease or food chain emergency incidents.
The above is not meant to be an exhaustive list but to provide a good indication of the main duties of the post. The emphasis on particular duties will vary over time according to business needs.
Salary
Currently the salary for the post will be within the range £52,026 - £55,685 within which pay increases will be on an incremental basis provided staff performance reports are satisfactory.
Starting salary will be at the minimum of the scale.
Working Hours
The successful candidate will normally be required to work 5 days each week, totaling 37 hours. AFBI operates a flexi working system.
Location
The successful candidate will be based at AFBI Stormont, Stoney Road, Belfast, BT4 3SD, however, they may, on occasion, also be expected to work at other sites in Northern Ireland as required.
Hybrid working can also be considered.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must, by the closing date for applications, provide evidence in their application form that they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- A veterinary medicine degree registerable with RCVS as a Veterinary Surgeon
And
- At least 2 years’ experience of working in a veterinary post in a veterinary diagnostic or research laboratory.
Or
- At least 2 years’ experience of working in progressive large animal (production animal) general practice.
And
- The candidate will be required, where the post deems necessary, to travel to various locations across Northern Ireland. When this requirement arises, the post holder must have access to a form of transport to enable them to attend work related meetings and events.
Applications will also be considered from applicants with relevant formal qualifications considered by the selection panel to be of an equivalent or higher standard to those stated.
Relevant or equivalent qualifications: give the type of qualification and date awarded (the date awarded is the date on which you were notified of your result by the official awarding body). If you believe your qualification is equivalent to the one required, the onus is on you to provide the panel with details of modules studied etc so that a well-informed decision can be made.
