Candidates should be board certified with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large
Animal), board eligible having completed an approved large animal medicine residency, or board certified/eligible within the European College of Equine Internal Medicine.
The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is soliciting applications for a full-time Faculty Member in Large Animal Internal Medicine. Depending upon the strengths and career goals of the successful candidate an appointment may be made in one of the three faculty lines available: Clinical, Teaching or Tenure track. Rank at the time of appointment will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and track record and may be at Assistant,
Associate or Full Professor in any of the 3 tracks available. Currently, the LAIM section comprises 4 faculty who are ACVIM-LA boarded Diplomates, 2 instructors and 3 house officers.
The successful candidate in any of the three tracks (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) will have responsibilities in clinical, didactic teaching and laboratory teaching as well as providing clinical service in the Large Animal Hospital at UW-Veterinary Care. However, each of the tracks differ in their major emphasis for career advancement at UW-Madison and subsequently the overall percentage distribution of time and effort to clinical service, teaching and research. For Clinical track faculty, the major focus is in academic clinical practice, with an expectation of excellence in clinical service alongside the generation of new information within the individual’s chose clinical specialty, in this case, large animal internal medicine. For faculty in Teaching track the emphasis focuses on independent classroom, clinical and laboratory instruction as well as community and educational outreach efforts specific to the faculty member’s academic or clinical discipline. In Tenure track, successful faculty at UW-Madison are expected to develop and/or maintain an independent, extramurally funded research program.
The successful applicant will act as senior large animal internal medicine clinician in the Large Animal Teaching Hospital. During these weeks, the successful applicant will be responsible for overseeing and administering clinical care to equine, bovine, small ruminant and camelid patients within the Large Animal Hospital at UW-Veterinary Care; providing daytime and emergency care, clinical instruction of veterinary students and contributing to residency training within a ACVIM LAIM training program that includes 4 other ACVIM-LA Diplomates.
Clinical duties will include patient care, instruction and supervision of veterinary students, residents and consultation with referring veterinarians and clients, as well as shared participation in emergency duty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Large Animal Hospital, which has an approximate caseload of 1,600 patients per year, comprised of approximately 70% horses and 30% food animal (mainly dairy cattle with a small number of other farm animal species). The equine caseload is drawn predominantly from the State of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois/Greater Chicago area with a wide array of horse owners and breeds with a majority being Sport, Event and Pleasure Horses. The food animal caseload emphasizes individually valuable, high genomic value dairy cattle of both sexes from the surrounding region, many of which belong to multi-national reproductive companies, private farms as well as show cattle.
Delivery of didactic lectures and involvement in laboratory teaching will also be expectations for the successful candidate in any of the three tracks but the extent of the involvement will necessarily vary according to the track type, and rank at appointment.
