Haven Veterinary Surgeons

Are you a veterinary surgeon looking for a varied caseload? Passion for orthopaedics?

Haven is a single site small animal practice based in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The practice is a 5 minute drive away from the beach and easily commutable from Norwich (30 minutes by car). There are some beautiful areas nearby including the Broads National Park and Blakeney Point home to the largest seal colony in the country!

Due to one of our full time vets moving back home up north we are currently looking for a veterinary surgeon to join our friendly team currently made up of 7 vets, 12 RVNs and 2 SVNs, 3 PCAs as well as our reception and admin team.

The practice is well equipped and purpose built with 6 consult rooms, 2 operating theatres, X-ray, prep, hospital and isolation. Equipment includes new GE logic eR8 ultrasound, direct digital X-ray, dental X-ray, new pet ECO ICU with nebulisation and cooling functions, TonoVet and in-house lab (haematology, biochemistry, electrolytes, cortisol and T4). In the theatres we have adjustable tables, wall mounted LED lighting, electrocautery, suction, endoscopy (flexible and rigid) and high standard surgical kits.

Most of our orthopaedics are done in house (MMPs, lateral sutures, fracture repairs) and we also have a Cardiologist who visits every two weeks. Alongside this we have a steady exotic caseload and our clinical director has a special interest in exotics enabling us to offer diagnostics and surgery at our practice.

The Rota

We can accommodate full or part time hours. If full time you will be working a 40 hour week over 4 days with no OOH or sole charge. Saturday mornings (08:30-12:30) are on a rota of 1 in 4. Our OOH night and weekend work is covered by the MiNight Service at the 24 hour hospital just 2.5 miles away. Transfer any inpatients is done by our nurses and PCAs using our practice ambulance.

Our days are structured with 4 vets consulting and 2 vets operating, there is always at least 1 experienced vet available for an advice and support. Our working week is split into 2 days operating and 2 consulting with breaks (2x30 minute admin slots, 1x30 minute break and 1 hour for lunch) and admin time structured into the consult list. Appointment times are 30 minutes as standard with 15 minutes for straightforward rechecks, boosters or second vaccinations.

There is also the option of working for our MiNight Service through the CVS internal locum scheme if you would like.

Support and Progression

Career progression is just as important to us as it is to you. We are all strongly focused on development within the team and currently have two certificate holders one of which is starting to study for her second certificate in neurology! There is no set CPD limit and we would be keen to support courses or a certificate if you have a particular interest. We are open to ideas and investing in new equipment in order to support our staff, facilitate learning and make our lives that little bit easier. Since the start of the pandemic we have tried a few different changes including lengthening appointments to 30 minutes, triage nurses and booster clinics.

The Package
  • The salary range for this role is £45k - £70k DOE
  • Up to 7 weeks' holiday a year + Bank Holidays (or equivalent time off). Plus, gain an extra days holiday each year in your first 5 years of service
  • We cover your memberships
  • Generous CPD budget. Being part of CVS gives us access to a wide range of CPD from webinars to practical/ wet lab courses and resources such as BSAVA manuals through Knowledge Hub
  • We know that your personal priorities will differ from others so we offer a range of benefits and flexible working patterns including the ability to buy and sell holiday, Healthshield, Perkbox, pension scheme, maternity and paternity pay, cycle to work and Sharesave schemes

We know that benefits are key, and that your personal benefits priorities will differ from others. Holidays, pensions, discounts, paternal leave, fee payments or share save schemes might be your priority. Flexible working is essential for others, and we are very open to finding a creative working pattern that suits. For clinical staff, CPD is probably critical. Just so you know we offer a wide range of amazing CPD – you'll have access to Knowledge Hub, the best online veterinary learning resource within the industry - and we also offer an allowance to spend on external courses too. If you'd like to learn more, do feel free to contact the recruiter managing this campaign and ask them to talk you through our offerings. Or, if easier, you can find a list on our careers site CVS Employee Benefits- what we can offer you. (cvsukltd.co.uk)

Feedback

Here's what one of our vets thinks about working at Haven ''I joined Haven in June 2020 after reading the feedback of vet who worked at the practice. I was looking for a job where I would be supported and mentored and I've not been disappointed! The whole team is friendly and will always help each other when needed. I feel I have time here to do full work ups, discuss cases with my colleagues and write notes/ do admin. Management are really open to feedback and trialling new ideas to make our life a little bit easier. There is a really varied case load and I have had the opportunity to see and do so much in both surgery and medicine and I am now in the process of starting my surgery certificate!”
