The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Veterinary Surgeon to join our team of caring and professional vets and nurses who provide the very best of care to companion animals. We offer a friendly supportive team environment, with medical and clinical freedom. Our consulting sessions are 3 times daily and are strictly by appointment only. Each vet has a morning where they are scheduled to operate. Those vets who are not scheduled to operate usually assist with operations after the morning consults, if necessary.

This is a full-time role working approximately 40 hours during the week over 4 or 5 days per week.

Saturday mornings are currently on a 1 in 3 rota.

Salary for the role is up to £50,000 negotiable depending on experience.

Given our island location, we provide our own out of hours service. Our clients appreciate the continuity and familiarity that this offers. On call is one night per week. Weekends are usually 5-6 per year. On Saturdays, the on-call vet would work in the clinic along with a second vet up until 12.30pm. After this time, the clinic is closed, and attendance is as and when required.

About Us

Milan Veterinary Practice has been established on the Isle of Man for over 30 years. We are a mixed practice, with 3 branches across the island. Our main clinic is in Douglas, with branches in Castletown and Peel.

Our Douglas clinic has 3 consulting rooms. We have a large prep room, with separate theatre, and a further separate room for dental procedures. We have a large kennel space. In Douglas we have digital radiography, ultrasound and in house Idexx equipment.

Castletown has 2 consulting rooms. We also operate in Castletown, where there is again kennels, prep room and separate theatre. Castletown also has an in house Idexx machine.

Our Peel clinic is currently for consulting only. This busy clinic has recently reopened following a move to new premises and a full refurbishment.

The Isle of Man is a beautiful place to live. With easy access to beaches and open countryside, lovely restaurants and cafes, there is plenty to do.

The Isle of Man is very multicultural with people having relocated here from all over the world. It is a welcoming place, and there is something for everyone, no matter what you enjoy.

There are also good connections by air and sea to the UK and Ireland, if you want to explore further afield.

There are lots of different sporting clubs and events.  The island is probably well known as the host of the famous Isle of Man TT Races. This motorcycle festival is held each year in early June, and sees competitors racing on the island’s roads over the 37.73-mile-long mountain course.  The island is also well known for being home to the tailless Manx cat.

About the Team and Culture

We have a team of 7 vets. As a mixed practice, some of the vets are truly mixed and do small, farm and equine work. Some of our vets are purely small animal only. We are very well supported by our team of 9 lovely, experienced veterinary nurses. We have an excellent support team of 13 people, who do a brilliant job as receptionists and administrators, as well as multiple other roles!

We have a visiting ophthalmologist to whom we can refer complicated ocular cases. He visits the island every 2-4 weeks.

We are looking for someone who is confident in their abilities, and also happy to teach and support junior vets.

We support and do the veterinary work for the ManxSPCA. This is an island charity which cares for all animals, but predominantly cats, dogs and wildlife. Their aim is to rehome animals where at all possible, and with wildlife to release them back into their natural habitat.

Applicant Requirements

As an experienced vet you will support the Practice Director and senior vet in the running of the practice. You should be capable of all routine surgeries, as well as GDVs, and other abdominal and soft tissue surgeries.

Skills in medicine cases and also ultrasound would be favourable. Due to logistical issues with referring to the UK centres, there is a lot of scope for following through with complex cases.

An interest in teaching/leading junior vets would also be advantageous.
You must have RCVS membership and a valid UK driving licence.
