Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists is a large multidisciplinary referral hospital providing veterinary referral services across the South of England including London and the Thames Valley. Our services include Orthopaedic surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Oncology and Diagnostic Imaging. The hospital is an ISFM gold feline clinic and was awarded the BVHA design award for an outstanding working environment. We are part of CVS (UK) Ltd, the largest provider of integrated veterinary services in the UK; the referrals division currently operates eight referral hospitals in the UK and Ireland.

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic RVN to join our Surgical Service nursing team. This role supports and works closely with both the soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeons, resident(s) and interns in providing a world-class service to clients, referring vets and the patients under our care. This is achieved through a collaborative approach to communications, efficient workflow, optimised patient care and rehabilitation.

This is ideally a full time role working 40 hours a week (Monday-Friday) with a 1:5 contribution to the weekend rota and time off in lieu. Participation in the bank holiday rota is also required twice a year.

Key duties and tasks include:
  • Attend morning rounds and understand inpatient requirements. In addition, collect any prescriptions to be dispensed
  • Review inpatient treatment plans and kennel charts and act on discrepancies and errors (medication dosages, transcription errors, etc.)
  • Contribute to surgery-specific inpatient care in wards including medication administration/dispensing, blood tests, bandage/dressing changes, tube/drain management as necessary and physiotherapy
  • Act as a point of contact for leadership and training for surgery-specific in-patient care techniques for ward and rotational RVN teams
  • Assist with the admission process including physical examinations, blood tests, IV cannulation, admission/workflow paperwork
  • Conduct sedations and anaesthetics recoveries for both orthopaedic and soft tissue cases and support other departments as directed by your line manager
  • Support and participate in diagnostic imaging where relevant including recheck x-rays
  • Help facilitate and engage in clinical audits for surgical cases
  • Assist clinicians in theatre by scrubbing in


Key skills and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures
  • Good standards of inpatient care
  • Strong communication skills
  • Resilience – ability to work under pressure
  • Experience of working in referrals is not essential as training can be provided
  • Experience in anaesthesia
