Practice veterinary medicine for the whole nation’s well-being.

At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), we have a mission we’re very serious about: safeguarding animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

Created in 2014, following a merger of several other agencies, we are an Executive Agency of Defra, and our responsibilities are diverse and far-reaching. These include the identification and control of endemic and exotic diseases and pests in animals, plants and bees; the facilitation of international trade in animals, products of animal origin and plants; and the protection of endangered wildlife through licensing and registration. We also act as an international reference laboratory for many farm animal diseases and regulate the safe disposal of animal by-products to reduce the risk of potentially dangerous substances entering the food chain.

As a Senior Veterinary Inspector in the Wales, you will play a front-line role in safeguarding health, protecting the economy and enhancing
food security. Applying state veterinary medicine in the delivery of Government priorities, your responsibilities will span inspection, surveillance, regulation, enforcement and research.

You will help us prepare and respond to incidents and disease out-breaks - from contributing to plans and exercises, through to carrying
out investigations of livestock. You will also conduct investigations into animal welfare and the cause of diseases, and play an active role in approval and audit of premises, equipment and vehicles. Along the way, you will develop good working relationships - from animal keepers, to
the veterinary profession and Government departments - establishing yourself as a trusted source of expertise.

A Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, your professional credentials are complemented by a varied set of wider skills. A logical and methodical approach to processing complex problems equips you to work and make decisions solo. As important
as your analytical and fact-finding skills will be a flair for original and creative thinking. Crucially, you will bring to the role excellent communi-cation and relationship building skills, enabling you to provide authoritative advice in difficult circumstances.
