The University of Liverpool and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine seek applications from clinically qualified graduates for our next annual cohort of Clinical PhD studentships, commencing 1st September 2022, and funded by The Wellcome Trust. These posts offer exciting oppor-tunities for research training, and are designed as the first step towards developing a research career in diseases of resource poor settings. The Liverpool Clinical PhD Programme has strong links with many potential overseas research sites.

The successful applicants will be based overseas, typically spending
2 or more of the 3 years in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC), completing a clinical research PhD project, addressing a research question of relevance to local health needs. Applicants may spend a reduced period of time overseas should personal circumstances dictate, but the need to focus on health problems relevant to LMICs would remain essential.

Applicants are expected to submit a 500-word concept note outlining a potential research project with their initial application. If shortlisted for interview this will need to be developed into a 3000-word project pro-posal. We expect to inform candidates selected for interview in February with interviews taking place in May. Early contact with a Liverpool asso-ciated supervisor is encouraged and will be essential if shortlisted for interview. Projects may cover all aspects of health research. Those with an interest in applied and/or experimental medicine are encouraged to apply.

Applicants for the scheme can include graduates who possess a clinical qualification and license to practice in the UK. This includes doctors, midwives, nurses, public health trainees, pharmacists and other allied health professionals and veterinary graduates.

To apply, **Medical graduates** must have passed the relevant specialty postgraduate exam e.g. MRCP, MRCS, MRCOphth/FRCOphth Part 1, MRCPsych, MRCOG Part 1, MRCPCH, FRCA Part 1. GPs are advised to contact the office to clarify their eligibility. It is anticipated that most applicants will have already commenced specialist training, but this
is not essential. Individuals within their last six months of specialist training would not usually be eligible but should contact the scheme
to discuss. Medical appointments will be made according to the University’s standard clinical pay scale.

Veterinary graduates must be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Veterinary appointments will be made according to standard (non-clinical) University pay scales.

Midwives and Nurses must have current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have a minimum of 2 years full time post-registra-tion experience (or equivalent part-time). A relevant Master’s degree would be advantageous. However, candidates with a first class or upper second-class honours degree will be considered if they can demonstrate substantial research experience.

Other clinical professionals must hold their relevant professional license and will be assessed on criteria similar to midwives and nurses.

All applicants will be expected to demonstrate strong academic potential and a clear interest in health problems in the global south and a desire to pursue these in their future career.

Successful applicants who conduct projects in Malawi should note
that this appointment will be subject to in-country tax regulations and Malawian Tax will be deducted from salary by the employer. Work in other countries may require alternate tax arrangements.

to University of Liverpool recruitment processes. Depending on the institution in which their primary supervisor is based, successful applicants will either be appointed to The University of Liverpool or Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine from the outset of their fellowship.
