The Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH), was established in North Ryde, Sydney in 2007 with a second hospital opening on the Central Coast of New South Wales in 2017. SASH offers a wide range of specialist services including Anaesthesia, Avian & Exotics, Cardiology, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Reproduction Medicine, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, Surgery and a renowned 24-hour Emergency and Critical Care department. The Emergency department provides care to over 10,000 patients per year and the Critical Care Department over 5,000.
  
Program objective:
This is a 12-month specialty internship program within the Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) department. The goals of the program are to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and experience to be highly competent emergency doctors and provide an introduction to Critical Care Medicine. This position is ideally suited for individuals wishing to pursue specialty training in ECC or emergency veterinarians wish to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  
Minimum requirements:

  1. Graduated from an accredited veterinary college or school,
  2. Completion of a small animal rotating internship or have commensurate experience,
  3. Current registered or eligible for registration with the New South Wales Veterinary Practitioner Board; for further information visit the NSW VPB website (www.vpb.nsw.gov.au/registration)

Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities:
The clinical commitment will involve a fair distribution of daytime shifts, swing shifts and overnight shifts during a 4 day/week work pattern. The ECC intern will be required to work their fair share of weekdays, weekends and public holidays. When performing clinical duties in the Emergency Department the ECC Intern will be responsible for providing immediate stabilisation and diagnostic procedures. The intern will be responsible for the entire case management of mild and moderately ill patients, while severely ill or injured patients will be managed with the assistance of an ECC resident, ECC Specialist or experienced emergency veterinarians.  Interns are responsible for professional client communications, timely referring veterinarian communications, and maintenance of a high quality medical record. There are no on-call responsibilities.
  
Mentorship:
The ECC intern will be assigned a mentor (ECC specialist) at the beginning of the program. In addition the ECC Intern will work under the direct supervision of an ECC specialist for roughly 50% of their Emergency Department rotations and 100% of their Critical Care Department rotations. ECC Interns will attend ECC Journal Club and topic-based ECC resident rounds weekly, and encouraged to attend Intern Rounds which occur on a weekly basis.

Certification: A certificate of successful completion will be awarded at the end of the internship.
  
Start Date: The ECC Internship will commence on Monday January 3rd 2022.
