The role
We are looking to recruit a Named Veterinary Surgeon to work as part of the management team in our Animal Services Unit at the University of Bristol.
What will you be doing?
The successful candidate will help to ensure that the University meets and exceeds the requirements of the Home Office and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. The NVS will provide high quality veterinary advice on the use and care of laboratory animals, championing a culture of continuous improvement in animal welfare within a 3Rs framework. The NVS is a member of the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body, actively participating in decision-making and ethical approval of research proposals. The NVS will provide training for current and potential Home Office licensees in the University, will undertake competency assessments for research and Animal Services Unit staff engaged in scientific procedures, and will provide general advice and guidance to technical and research staff on the conduct of research involving animals and animal welfare.
You should apply if
- A good working knowledge of the use of animals in research and UK legislation covering this use
- Experience in laboratory animal science and medicine covering a broad range of species
- RCVS membership and are eligible to be approved as a NVS by the Home Office
- Effective communication skills, able to listen and understand the scientific issues relating to research, and persuade scientists of actions required to maintain high standards of animal welfare and compliance
- A full driving licence
