Veterinary Surgeon required at Glenshane Vet Clinic, Maghera, Londonderry.

The Role

We are looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our mixed practice. The role will be approximately 35% Small Animal, 60% Farm and 5% Equine. The position will include the usual first opinion consultations and routine surgery for small animal, but as we are rurally located, we will do what we can for those clients who do not wish to be referred. This can include soft tissue or abdominal surgeries and most orthopaedic procedures. On the farm animal side, we have a good mix of beef, dairy and sheep, varying from the usual routine and emergency work to herd health/fertility visits. Quite a few of our clients have pedigree herds and flocks. We do some TB testing, but it is equally shared between all. Equine veterinary is mostly routine work plus all the first opinion work in a racing stable. We have dedicated small animal days if that is of interest. The rota is 1 in 4 week-nights and 1 weekend in 4. There is time back in lieu when you have worked a weekend. Bank holidays are equally shared between all vets and small animal OOH is alongside a dedicated nurse.

About Us

Glenshane Vets is a 3-branch practice 40min from the airport, with areas of outstanding beauty, beaches, mountains and city life. The branches in Maghera and Kilrea are fully equipped sites: for small animals there are kennels, x-ray, ultrasound, ECG, endoscope, idexx vetlab, etc, for farm animals there is a crush, pen, foot trimming facility, easy scan, small lab, small ruminant operating table. In Maghera there is also an equine stock with stables. Dungiven is a small branch for first opinion routine work. Maghera is the main OOH site. We have a young team that is forward thinking. As referral is not often an option, we will do anything we can to help whatever animal we are dealing with. We put animal welfare and health first and we try to give a great client experience to both pet owners, farmers and horse owners. We have a great team. Most of the staff has been with practice for a long time. We are 9 vets, 3 RVN's, 2 SVNs, 1 ANA, and 9 support staff. 3 vets boast 20 years plus experience and 2 vets with 10 years plus experience. 2 of these vets are dedicated small animal vets, 2 other vets are dedicated farm animal vets and 1 vet is the typical mixed vet, a good all-rounder. We are a nurse training centre and train new graduate vets for the IVC Graduate Academy.

Applicant Requirements

Ideally the candidate would be a qualified mixed Veterinary Surgeon with practice experience. A team player with a farm animal bias would be a plus. As there is some sole charge work in the branch surgeries the ideal applicant will need to be confident and competent working indepen-dently. We would expect the applicant to be able to do first opinion small animal work and routine surgery like neutering, lumpectomy, amputa-tion, c-section. On the farm side the candidate should be able to do examinations, treat farm animals, calve/c-section cows, lamb/c-section sheep, uterine prolapse, dehorn/castrate animals. A plus would be knowledge of routine fertility work and basic equine veterinary knowledge.
