Night ECC Veterinary Surgeon required at Sheriffs Highway Vets, Gateshead.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and confident Veterinary Surgeon to join us as our Night ECC Vet, working alongside our dedicated on-site ECC nurses and nursing assistants. Our 24-hour service and 'one team' ethos provides for exceptional continuity of care, with case handovers at the beginning and end of every day allowing plenty of time for clinical discussion.

We will support your interests through our generous CPD allowance and vet surgeon development programme, ensure you are refreshed with ample holidays and look after you with our well-being programme.

A night shift begins with a handover from the daytime hospital vet at 6pm and ends with a handover the following day at 6.45am. While the case-load is variable, a private bedroom and bathroom is provided for the ECC vet and this is very much a sleeping shift. Our RVNs handle client calls, triage and the majority of patient care through the night.

  • Rota 7-nights on, 7-nights off
  • Accommodation provided
  • Supported by dedicated on-site team

About Us

Sheriffs Highway Veterinary Hospital is an RCVS Tier 3 Hospital in Gateshead. Our night-time ECC team supports our busy hospital, 3 branch surgeries and an additional 3 partner practices. Our clinical team is led by Advanced Practitioners and Certificate holders in surgery and medicine. Several of our vets are working towards Certificates/AP status, with one of our night vets working towards an ECC certificate.

The hospital is very well equipped, with dedicated and advanced surgical and medical facilities and equipment. We have a wealth of ECC essentials, including comprehensively equipped laboratory, on site and a very good working relationship with other local OOH providers, the Pet Blood Bank and work with several local charities.

Our Gateshead location is ideal for access to the coast and countryside of the North East, in addition to all the culture and amenities of Newcastle and Gateshead.

We are a team of 12 daytime Vets, 2 night-time Vets, 16 VN's and 6 Nursing Assistants. We have an Advanced Practitioner in surgery and a medicine certificate-holder, with several vets also working towards advanced qualifications (including one night vet in the final year of the BSAVA ECC Certificate). The integration of our daytime and night-time teams ensures optimal patient care and a fantastic teamwork. This ethos is important to us, with frequent socials and pizza fuelled in-house CPD (both lunchtime and evening).

Applicant Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a RCVS registered Veterinary Surgeon with at least 3 years' experience in small animal clinical work and be confident in dealing with emergency medical and surgical cases. Experience in sole-charge ECC work would be an asset. We would also welcome applications from existing certificate-holders or those working towards an advanced qualification.
