Training and mentoring future clinical academic leaders:  2020 intake

ECAT Clinical Lectureships provide: (i) an introductory year with 80% clinical training time in the relevant residency programme at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and 20% academic time to identify PhD supervisors and develop a bespoke PhD project in one of the internationally competitive multidisciplinary research Centres in Edinburgh; (ii) a 3-year full-time fully-funded PhD Fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust; and (iii) up to 3 further years as a post-doctoral Clinical Lecturer to complete clinical specialty training and with 20% academic time to initiate post-doctoral training and prepare applications for an intermediate fellowship or other academic post. Progression through the scheme is subject to satisfactory performance but does not involve competitive interviews after initial appointment.

To-date, the ECAT programme has recruited 79 trainees from all around the UK, representing over 20 clinical disciplines, including veterinary medicine.  Trainees have selected PhD projects in around 20 different research centres.

Candidates for ECAT-V Clinical Lectureships should have evidence of high academic achievement and will have completed an internship/residency or had 2-3 years of experience in clinical practice. Candidates who have already undertaken a period of full-time research leading to a doctoral degree are not eligible for the ECAT scheme but are welcome to make contact.
