As part of an exciting new initiative we are seeking to recruit a dynamic research-active academic staff member to a joint post between Bristol Veterinary School and the SPHERE Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration, a critical mass of researchers developing sensors and sensor informatics for applications in human healthcare and well-being at the School of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Engineering Maths, University of Bristol.

This post is one of three new academic positions focused on Bristol Veterinary Schools’ new highly instrumented facilities, the John Oldacre Centre for Sustainability and Welfare in Dairy Production and the Centre of Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL) Poultry Facility. These new research facilities offer intense monitoring platforms capturing individual movements, activities, behaviours and interactions of the animals together with detailed individualised measurement of emissions,
production and health interventions, fine-grained monitoring of the environment and automatic feed bins for sub-group nutrition trials.

Our fundamental aim is to create and sustain intensively monitored birth cohorts in order to tackle grand research challenges in animal health and welfare, global food security, disease and anti-microbial resistance dynamics, as well as facilitate translation of sensor technologies and sensor informatics to the human sphere. The platform represents a clear opportunity for the development, training, testing and validation of sensors, precision farming technologies, farming innovation, smart management systems and data science integration methodologies against our real-time ‘reference’ monitoring setup, integrated across all captured data types, on a fully accessible cohort and supported by multi-disciplinary University of Bristol expertise.

You will be an applied engineer or computer scientist eager to develop their research programme on applied sensor and/or sensor data fusion methodology development for animal sensing and biometrics. You will have a strong track record of publication and grant funding success and will be expected to develop and consolidate a research group, forge collaborations with colleagues in Bristol Veterinary School, the wider University, and externally, teach on undergraduate and taught 
postgraduate courses, and supervise postgraduate research students.
