About the opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists, at Senior Lecturer level, for a highly motivated Specialist Clinical Pathologist to contribute diagnostics, teaching and research to advance the education and research goals of Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Services at the Sydney School of Veterinary Sciences. This position will provide educational leadership in the discipline of clinical pathology through provision of a high-quality clinical pathology service to support engagement with the professional community as well as developing a superior learning environment for students to be able to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve professional qualifications.

While the position involves clinical pathology across companion, livestock and wildlife species, partial funding of the position by the Valentine Charlton bequest brings a particular focus on feline clinical pathology to the role. Responsibilities include:

• providing leadership in veterinary clinical pathology particularly in the in DVM rotations program
• development of greater engagement with specialist feline and small animal practices in the Sydney area through development of new diagnostic services and avenues for clinical support
• training of veterinary practitioners in feline clinical pathology through Continuing Veterinary Education (CVE) programs, such as continuing education seminars, conferences, podcasts, articles in Control & Therapy or accessible journals
• enhancing the existing SSVS residency programs, permitting specialist training in the discipline of veterinary clinical pathology, and permitting veterinary medicine residents to conduct Training in Related Disciplines in Clinical Pathology within SSVS
• conduct or facilitate research activities expected to translate into enhanced diagnostics for feline medicine.

About you

This role requires both academic and professional capability: it is expected that the successful candidate would be able to develop and sustain teaching excellence in their specialist discipline.

• Veterinary Science degree registerable in NSW
• Board certification by the ACVP/ECVCP or Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Clinical Pathology
• Registration with the NSW Veterinary Surgeons Board as a Specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
• Willingness to engage with University and further education programs in teaching and learning.

Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Services (VPDS), supports its activities in teaching, research and professional engagement by providing a range of diagnostic services across the disciplines of veterinary anatomical pathology, clinical pathology, cytopathology, microbiology and molecular biology. The school is well supported by specialist level veterinary anatomical pathologists, highly skilled general pathologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists and technical staff. The School is currently well placed to capitalize on recently upgraded clinical pathology laboratories (PC2 facility), established Laboratory Management System and capital investment in laboratory analyzers, to achieve NATA accreditation for our diagnostic pathology facilities.
