About the opportunity

Reporting to the Head Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Service, the Lecture and Senior Lecturer’s primary focus to educate veterinary students and animal scientists and conduct research of national significance in ruminant health and production.  To provide ruminant health and production services to clients of the Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit with a view to expanding the existing consultancy service.  The appointee will develop strong relationships with Government and industry stakeholders in ruminant production for research and teaching.

• A veterinary degree registrable in NSW
• A specialist qualification in ruminant health registrable in NSW (Essential for Level C Only)
• Advanced qualification in Ruminant health (Membership Australian College of Veterinary Scientists or equivalent) or substantial completion
• Relevant industry professional experience in livestock (particularly beef and small ruminant ) health and production
• Experience in undergraduate teaching in veterinary and animal science in livestock health and production.
• A willingness to be based either permanently, or for extended periods of time, in central western NSW in order to accommodate a possible shift in location of ruminant medicine teaching and research in the foreseeable future.

SSVS has strong production animal health research and veterinary diagnostic pathology programs with established links to researchers at the New South Wales Centre for Animal and Plant Biosecurity, Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute. The Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit operates within the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Camden delivering a range of on farm preventive health services and veterinary consultations to livestock producers in NSW and industry level consultations both nationally and internationally.

The position is currently based predominantly on the Camden campus within the Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit, which provides clinical, herd health, and reproductive services to dairy, beef and sheep farmers throughout New South Wales, as well as a local family and hobby farm clientele. The Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit also runs a number of farm-based research projects aimed at providing practical on-farm solutions to industry disease and reproduction problems. The applicant is also expected to collaborate with the Farm Animal and Veterinary Public Health group which supports major industry and international funded research programs in sheep, cattle, horse, fish, oyster, poultry and pig health, welfare and production. Opportunities exist for collaboration within the Faculty of science and industry members of the Dairy Research Foundation using the advanced dairy technologies and robotics available at the University’s 400 cow dairy located at Camden Campus.

The position is designed to further develop livestock industry partnerships, clinical and extension services teaching and research across the faculty, with a strong focus on farm animal (cattle and sheep) health, production and welfare, and provide opportunities for expansion of existing livestock health programs in Australia. The position is full-time, and currently based at Camden with sometime at the Sydney Campus. However, the incumbent must be willing to be based either permanently, or for extended periods of time, in central western NSW in order to accommodate a possible shift in location of ruminant medicine teaching and research in the foreseeable future.
