The University of Cambridge is pleased to announce this opportunity to join our team of Named Veterinary Surgeons within the University Biomedical Services division.

The position will require the successful applicant to work as a Named Veterinary Surgeon as defined by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, for which the salary range is £39,992 - £50,618.

Where a suitable veterinary candidate does not yet hold a Named Veterinary Surgeon certificate, they could be under appointed as a Veterinary Surgeon (salary of £35,550), and provided with the necessary training and support in order to attain Named Veterinary Surgeon status within the first 12 months of employment. Once Named Veterinary Surgeon status has been attained, an appropriate salary point and grade shall be applied.

As Named Veterinary Surgeon, the successful applicant will work closely with our experienced Named Veterinary Surgeons to provide a comprehensive veterinary service. As well as providing clinical veterinary care you will also have responsibility to ensure compliance with specific legislation in relation to the health and welfare of a variety of laboratory animal species within the Establishment. This includes providing advice to researchers for both regulated and non-regulated animal research; overseeing compliance of specialist functions, for example: aseptic surgery,quarantine and housing of immunocompromised animals; and the control and use of controlled drugs. The successful applicant shall participate in the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body, and support the training and supervision of licence holders and animal care staff. If appointed as Veterinary Surgeon, the successful applicant shall gradually take on the above responsibilities, whilst undertaking an agreed 12 month Personal Development Plan to gain the necessary training and expertise required of a Named Veterinary Surgeon.

Applicants must be qualified veterinarians, members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and preferably have further qualifications and/or experience in a discipline relevant to laboratory animal sciences e.g. CertLAS, DLAS, ECLAM diploma and/or PhD. Experience in a similar role (in an academic, practice or commercial environment) and an interest in laboratory animal disease/pathology and anaesthesia would be an advantage.

The post requires someone who has good spoken and written English, able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels including explaining clinical and scientific data to lay-people. The successful applicants needs to be a strong team player who is self-motivated, is diplomatic and has sound ethical judgement. The successful applicant will need to be computer literate, with experience in teaching/training or oral presentation skills (desirable).

The role will be primarily based in West Cambridge however applicants must have access to their own method of transport in order to travel between laboratory facilities and respond to out of hours calls. Any out of hours work will be compensated.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
