Inspectors have a critical role in the operation of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, which regulates experimental or other scientific procedures applied to living animals, ensuring that the expected benefits from the work justify the harms to the animals and complies with the principles of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement).
The Inspector’s role is central to the maintenance of public confidence that animal welfare is properly safeguarded in the context of quality biomedical scientific research, as judged by both stakeholders working under the terms of the Act and the wider community. The Inspector will act as professional adviser to Department of Health officials in relation to policy formulation and licensing and has a key role in the implementation of the controls of scientific procedures on animals covered by the Act.
