Veterinary Medicines Directorate

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) protects animal health, public health and the environment. VMD is an executive agency, sponsored by DEFRA.

VMD works to promote animal health and welfare by assuring the safety, quality and efficiency of veterinary medicines. They also work to protect public health and meet high standards of animal welfare as well as working closely with the Food Standards Agency to protect and improve the safety
of food the public eat.

This is a challenging yet exciting time to be joining VMD, following the decision to leave the European Union; this will be a pivotal role for the organisation and an opportunity for the post holder to shape the role post EU exit. Whatever the outcome, medicines will still need to be authorised and regulated and therefore the Director of Authorisations will play a leading role in managing the EU exit transition, maintaining VMD partnerships with non-EU medicine agencies and expanding VMD’s global influence.

The role will work closely with the Chief Executive, management board and other senior stakeholders and will require you to maintain high-profile working relationships. You will be an influential advocate for VMD’s work, able to influence and negotiate effective strategies for both national and international issues.

You will have a proven track record of effective leadership in a senior management post, ideally with a regulatory background. You will be a natural leader, with the enthusiasm and energy to motivate and inspire teams across the organisation as well as managing a high workload with conflicting
priorities. Experience or knowledge of the veterinary medicines or the animal health industry is essential. You will be a confident communicator, able to engage successfully at a senior level with stakeholders including media representation.
